Ms. Harwood was very brave in class last week: She took the risk of a sugar high to give her kids an interactive and exciting lesson! She writes, “My class measured fractional amounts by using a recipe for holiday trail mix! They had to simplify fractions, find common denominators and equal measurements. So fun!”
This was a great lesson. Thanks for sharing Ms. Harwood!

Congratulations, Brooklyn Garcia, Holiday Card Winner!

Mr. Pendarvis’s 5th grade Science/Social Studies classes did an awesome project! He writes, “In our class we had a Recycling Project, where students had to be engineers and create a new item out of recycled materials. The goal is to use materials that could be reused to make something for their homes and to keep items out of the environment!”
Be sure to scroll through, there’s some really awesome projects in here! And of course, even more photos on Facebook. :) GREAT JOB, Warriors!

Our PTO never ceases to amaze us. They literally dedicate hours and hours of their personal time to our staff and students to help make ILIS the most magical place to go to school. This last day before break is no exception! They bagged up 1200 (!!!) bags with a treat, custom bandana and water bottle stickers for our Warriors students! They also rolled, tagged and distributed 127 custom shirts to our staff! Much of our success this school year is thanks to all our PTO has done to support our school and initiatives. They've done it all, from managing the Lost & Found, to running the Boosterthon fundraiser, getting projects scheduled and completed with those funds raised, coming in for duty free lunch for our staff, and much, much more. Please take a moment to send your gratitude to this amazing group of volunteers as we head off into our Winter Break!

Congratulations, Harlow Kelsey, Holiday Card Winner!

Congratulations to our Holiday Card winners! We will release each design separately over the next couple of weeks. We are proud of our students and amazed at their talent. Thank you art teachers for cultivating that talent. Winners, their art teacher, and principal all received blank cards to share. The LCSD Board of Trustees and Board attorney received a set of blank cards. Cards signed by Dr. Fitzpatrick were sent to our partners.

We have a message from Ms. Smith at ILMS for our 6th grade families!
"Hello 6th grade parents,
ILMS Track and Field will allow current 6th graders/rising 7th graders to attend ILMS conditioning sessions beginning January 8th. Please have each interested student join the google classroom for 6th graders with the code: pzlo3ru. Conditioning sessions will be held January 8th, January 13th, January 15th, January 27th, January 21st (due to MLK Day) and January 29th from 4:00pm-5:30pm. To participate each student will have to submit a sports physical document and a signed waiver form by their parent/guardian. Sports physical forms and waivers can be found in the 6th grade T&F google classroom. Required documents must be turned in to Coach Smith on January 8th at the first conditioning session. Students are required to wear weather appropriate clothing (jacket and long pants), running shoes (no crocs/slippers or slides) and bring a water bottle (filled before practice). If you have any questions please feel free to email Coach Smith at kaila.smith@lcsd.k12.sc.us.
Thank you!"

Oh boy- what’s more fun than music OR science?!
Music AND Science!
In a cross curriculum lesson, 6th grade science teacher Ms. Veritzan had the kids “all ears” as they learned about sound waves!
She write, “Students in my classes investigated the different properties of sound using tuning forks. Students worked with tuning forks of different frequencies and a shallow pan of water to conduct the investigation. They discovered that sound is created by vibrations and they can change the intensity, or loudness, of the sound by changing the force with which they hit the tuning fork. They came to the conclusion that different sized tuning forks have different frequencies and make different sounds. They were able to explain multiple points where energy transfer was present in the experiment.”
So cool! Thank you for sharing, Ms. Veritzan!

On Wednesday evening we had a festive Winter concert with our 5th and 6th graders as well as the ILHS band! It was a *packed house* as our band program continues to grow under the leadership of our Indian Land band directors. It really is an amazing thing to see!
Ms. Riddle and Ms. Gavigan have created magic in such a short window of time with our 5th graders, many of whom had never touched an instrument until they got one just a few months ago! And it's amazing to see the growth between where they start to where they are after a year- our 6th graders blew us away.
We are very lucky to have Ms. Riddle and Ms. Gavigan on our team! Our students are in such great hands not only academically, but additionally the passion these two women show for music is like a seed planted in their students' hearts. We appreciate all they do for our Warriors!

We had our Winter Chorus Concert on Tuesday! Ms. Hunt and our Warriors did a phenomenal job. They have accomplished so much in just a few short months and sang beautifully under Ms. Hunt’s guidance and leadership. We are so proud of her and her students!
PS: we had a special guest appearance…scroll through to see who it is!
